Hints and Tips for Perfect Tiling

Sometimes, you may decide not to use a professional Tiler.  Of course you still want the perfect results so what follows are some helpful hints and tips to make your tiling as good as the professionals (well almost!).

 How big are your tiles?

Did you know that some modern "large style" wall tiles cannot be reliably fixed using normal adhesive, so its important to check that you have the right adhesive for the tiles.

Preparation is everything!

Plastering is often seen as "slop it on and get it pretty level", but if you want a smart finish to your tiling, it is essential to spend the time and effort ensuring your plastered wall is absolutely flat and smooth without any undulations.  This can be particularly hard on large walls but will be worth the effort.

Do you have a Power Shower?

With the higher pressure that is emitted from power showers, you will need to use the correct grout otherwise your shower will gradually pull out your grout allowing moisture to get behind your tiles.

Laying floor tiles on a wooden upstairs floor?

Floors supported by wooden joists will flex slightly.  With carpet this is not noticable, but with tiles it can cause the grout to break up and even tiles to crack.  Correct preparation and sealing of a substitute floor and use of the correct flexible adhesives and grout will ensure your floor retains its beautiful appearance.

Why is that power socket in the way!

Kitchens can be some of the hardest rooms to tile.  Not only do they often have lots of corners and nooks etc, but the walls are full of power sockets and switches.  Trying to cut tiles around sockets will leave a scrappy result.  Instead, take the socket off the wall and cut and fix the tile before putting the socket on again.

Fitting a new bathroom suite?

Don't just tile up to your basin, cistern etc, but ask the installers to leave a short gap so that tiles can be slid behind for a more professional finish.  The units can then be tightened against the tiles to finish the perfect job.

Marble Tiles?

Marble tiles can really make a big impression, but it is important to select the right adhesive for the tiles and the location they are to be fitted.

Drilling holes in Tiles?

Although tiles are very hard and brittle, holes can be safely drilled in order to mount towel rails etc. Drill a small pilot hole first before enlarging it to the required size.
